Ministry Profile: Strong Missions

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

Strong Missions is an interdenominational Christian organization that offers programs to help the people of Costa Rica and Nicaragua, especially children and families, gain the basic resources necessary for a healthy life. Strong Missions also provides a turn-key mission experience bringing you safe, affordable and fully organized mission/adventure trips to Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The work of Strong Missions is two fold. Strong Missions works with groups from the United States to help plan safe, affordable, and fully organized missions/adventure trips to Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Groups assist in ongoing construction projects, plan and implement faith-based activities with local children, and get an opportunity to experience and participate in some of the other year-round programs offered by Strong Missions.

Those year-round programs are part of Strong Missions Empowered Communities in which we work to develop communities in Latin America through sustainable strategies of local investment that break the cycle of poverty, reduce delinquency, minimize social risk, and change global perspectives. These programs include feeding, education, and extracurricular activities such as sports and fine and martial arts that work to raise test scores, increase self-confidence, improve concentration, and cultivate self-worth to children and families of very low resources throughout Costa Rica. In the coming years, we plan to extend this programming into Nicaragua as well.

Strong Missions is located in San Isidro de Grecia and has programs running in several parts of Costa Rica including precarios (slums) where gangs, violence, prostitution, and drugs are a way of life. In 2016, Strong Missions started hosting its first teams in Ochomogo, Nicaragua.

"I can think of no better example of God moving on a trip than my own personal story. In January of 2010, I attended a trip with Strong Missions, which changed my life forever. Prior to that trip, although I had grown up in the church, I would not consider myself a strong Christian and more than faith, I simply bargained with God saying, “If you do this for me, I will do that for you.” I came on this trip because I wanted to make the world a better place, not because I had a personal relationship with Christ.

On that trip we attended a Sunday morning church service in which we talked about the story of Gideon. Clear as day, I felt God calling me to follow him, saying “I have passed your tests I have done as you asked, now it is time for you to follow me.”

On that day, with that message, God started me on a path of service to Him. Since 2010, I have certainly grown in my faith and co-lead teams to Costa Rica. With each trip, I felt closer and closer to God in Costa Rica. In that time, I also felt God working on me to deepen my commitment to service. In January of 2013, I joined Strong Missions full time in Costa Rica. Since then I have had the opportunity to service in a variety of capacity with hundreds of Costa Ricans and folks from all over the United States, personally witnessing God’s continued work through and with so many of them."
